Symposium Papers
The ITMEMS symposia provide an opportunity for coral reef managers to share experiences and lessons learned, through multi-disciplinary consideration of management-related case studies and to identify gaps and priorities for future action to manage tropical marine ecosystems.
ReefBase hosts digital copies of the various papers presented at the 2nd ITMEMS, and this page provides access to them. You may search by author, words in the title, keywords, or by theme.

Abstract
|
The Caribbean Coastal Data Centre (CCDC) was created in 1999 to reflect the vision of the Centre for Marine Sciences, University of the West Indies, for a regional archiving, management and access centre for data on coastal ecosystems. The Centre archives data mainly from the Caribbean regional monitoring program CARICOMP, but also holds data from CPACC. The Centre coordinates activities of the GCRMN Northern Caribbean node and assembles data for GCRMN, which has been collected using the Reef Check and AGRRA methods as well as through local and national programs and projects in member countries. From available data and information, reports on the status of coral reefs in node countries are prepared and disseminated through GCRMN. The coastal and marine datasets are managed through relational databases, which improve the efficiency of data storage, speed up data access and retrieval and effectively convert raw data into valuable information that is accurate, timely, and cost effective to inform decision-making at different levels. A critical function of the Centre is the dissemination of data and information to interest groups. These include scientists, who are interested in highlighting regional trends and patterns in the datasets, managers, who use the information to guide decisions regarding management of their own resources and students studying Caribbean ecosystems. Data can be downloaded from a new website, www.ccdc.org.jm. These data may represent the only long-term datasets available for some countries and as well for the entire Caribbean region and are invaluable for increasing understanding of and managing coastal ecosystems. Future efforts of the Centre will be geared toward: (1) establishing partnerships with additional institutions and groups, thereby increasing the data and information archived and (2) disseminating information to additional target groups e.g. policy makers and community stakeholders, through reports suitable to the target audience, that will highlight pertinent and critical information needed to create knowledge. Such knowledge is required to effect changes in attitudes and ultimately in behaviour regarding the sustainable management of coastal resources.
