Symposium Papers
The ITMEMS symposia provide an opportunity for coral reef managers to share experiences and lessons learned, through multi-disciplinary consideration of management-related case studies and to identify gaps and priorities for future action to manage tropical marine ecosystems.
ReefBase hosts digital copies of the various papers presented at the 2nd ITMEMS, and this page provides access to them. You may search by author, words in the title, keywords, or by theme.

Abstract
|
The micro-logistics for implementing a Reef Check volunteer coral reef monitoring program differ across location. It is the role of the Reef Check coordinator to be creative as they organise this program locally. In Queensland, Australia there is a well-established coral reef monitoring and management system in place. However, the Great Barrier Reef is over 2000km in length and only a small portion of this is currently monitored under the government system. As this program develops, the implementation of Reef Check will provide a cost-effective expansion to our understanding of the reef processes of the Great Barrier Reef. At present, Reef Check is coordinated using a small government grant. However, local resources are being utilised to enhance the efficiency of expenditures in sea transport and training costs. Firstly, transport to the reef is provided free of charge by the dive industry who receive publicity for their efforts in return. Secondly, volunteer Marine Biology student trainees under the supervision of the coordinator train Reef Check volunteers. These students gain work-experience, whilst reducing the workload of the coordinator. Lastly, a take-home identification study presentation has been designed to maximise the training benefits of volunteers before their participation in formal training sessions.
