The ReefBase Pacific Education Center is a virtual resource center providing easy access to materials that support reef related education and outreach activities. These have been developed by various organisations and projects working in the region with the aim of mobilizing important information in a non-technical form to communities, school groups and the general public.
Sharing such resources through the ReefBase Pacific Education Center will help to ensure that important information can be widely dispersed to support reef education within the Pacific and beyond.
We encourage contributions of relevant resources to this collection. Please contact ReefBase.

REGIONAL KEY POINTS • Spanning almost half the globe, the Pacific is home more than a quarter of the world’s reefs – nearly 66,000 sq km. • About 7.5 million people live on the coast within 30 km of a coral reef in the Pacific, representing 50 percent of the total population of the region. • After Australia, the Pacific is the least threatened region, with slightly less than 50 percent of reefs affected by local threats (coastal development, marine-based pollution and damage, overfishing and destructive fishing, or watershed-based pollution), of which only 20 percent are at high or very high threat. • More than 920 Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are located in the Pacific, and include 13 percent of the region’s reefs.

Abstract
|
Seagrasses provide food, shelter, breeding grounds and nursery areas for many marine organisms, including fish, prawns, shellfish, jellyfish and octopus. Big animals graze on it; little animals live amongst it. Research has found that 400 square metres of seagrass can support 2,000 tonnes of fish a year. For people who enjoy catching and eating fish, the long-term health of our commercial and recreational fisheries relies heavily on the survival of seagrasses.

Abstract
|
Future objectives of marine and coral reef projects in the Pacific region, as well as lessons learnt in the past, have been translated into the two key messages for the 2008 Pacific Year of the Reef (PYOR) campaign by SPREP and its partners. The two key messages embody the campaign slogan of ‘strong reefs, strong islands’ and reflect the current and potential pivotal roles of reefs in Pacific island life.
This campaign runs for twelve months from February 2008-February 2009.
