Threats

This section in ReefBase provides information on the various threats to coral reefs for countries/territories. Much of the information was taken from various status reports, such as those produced by the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN), as well from UNEP-WCMC's "World Atlas of Coral Reefs". As is the case with many other parts of the database, we are continually adding information to the database as reports become available. Eventually we hope to provide relevant information on all coral reef countries.

Select any of the links below to access information on the threats to coral reefs.

Natural
This section provides information on the natural threats to coral reefs, such as biological infestations, diseases or natural sedimentation.
Human
This section provides information on the anthropogenic threats to coral reefs, such as overfishing, coastal development or pollution.
Climate
This section provides information on the climatic threats to coral reefs, such storms, sea level rise and excessive rainfall.
Bleaching
This section provides information on the occurance and severity of coral bleaching, a major cause of concern which has been linked to rising sea water temperatures and global climate change.
Reefs At Risk
This section provides access to information from the Reefs at Risk project. This project uses a map-based model of various potential threats from human activities to coral reefs. Currently, two Reefs at Risk reports have been produced: global (1998), and Regional: Southeast Asia (2002).
